What is tire retreading?

Retreading, also known as recapping is a re-manufacturing process for tires that replace the tread on worn out tires. Retreading is applied to casings of used tires that have been inspected and repaired. It gives a tire a new life.

How many types of tire retreading technologies?

There are 2 types:

  • Pre Cure: This is the latest technology in which previously prepared tread strip is applied to tire casing. This method allows more flexibility in tire sizes and it is the most commonly used method.
  • Hot or Mold Cure: Raw rubber is applied to the tire casing and it is then placed in a mold where tread is formed. A dedicated mold is required for each tire size and tread design.

At Sultan Enterprises Private Limited, Pre Curetyre retreading plant is installed.

Retreading Process:

  • Initial inspection: The purpose of initial inspection is to verify that a casing is acceptable for retreading by doing a thorough inspection of each tyre, inside and outside. Some casings are repaired and some are discarded. Tires can be retreaded multiple times if the casing is in usable condition.

  • Buffing: After a tire passes through initial inspection, it is put through the buffing process, which eliminates the old tread.
2
  • Repairing: Then the casing goes through the repairing stage if required, example repairing a nail hole or applying a patch.
3
  • Tread preparation and building: Building is the process of applyingpre molded tread. An uncured cushion gum develops a bond between the tread and the casing.
4
  • Enveloping &Vulcanizing: In the Pre Cure process, the uncured cushion has to be vulcanized while the pre molded tread has to be kept in position. Therefore the tire is put into an envelope which passes through a vacuum system. The purpose of curing is to apply specific heat and pressure over a period of time to the uncured rubber so that the rubber is cured to the point of best physical properties and maximum adhesion to the surrounding elements.
5
  • Final inspection: The final stage of the retreading process is to insure a quality retread is produced by a thorough inside and outside visual inspection.
