- All commercial airlines, as well as military jet aircraft, get their tires retreaded. In fact, nearly 90% of all aircraft tires now in service in the United States are retreads. The President of the United States signed an Executive Order in April 2000 requiring federal agencies to get their tires retreaded. More than 100,000 aircraft retreads are used annually with an average of 270 takeoffs and landings per tread life.
(Ref: http://www.retread.org/#!about-retreading/c1srn) - Premium quality tire manufacturers give a warranty of their casings for multiple retreading. Eg, Michelin, Bridgestone and Sumitomo.
- An exercise was carried out of collecting the worn out tire derby on the highway by The University of Massachusetts, to check whether this derby was of new tires or retreads, what they concluded in their article was that around 25% was of retreads and the rest was of new tires. (new tires and retreads are used equally).
Retreads are green
Retreads are environmentally friendly. It takes over 20 gallons of oil to manufacture one new truck tire. It takes only 7 gallons of oil to produce a retread.
